Family Fitness Running Weight loss — 26 July 2012

Yesterday I did a butt-kickin’ workout with the kids. I call it that because that’s where I’m feeling it today.

Gasp!

Showing off Demonstrating how to do squats and plyo-lunges for your kids will do that to you. Ahem.

I’m actually glad I’m sore today – yes, that means I’m making progress – especially in my legs because that’s where I need the most work. Strengthening my lower body is going to help me with so many of my goals including weight loss, toning and increasing my running speed. Working the large muscle groups really fires up my system and jump starts my progress.

I actually crashed my kids workout session yesterday and think I’m going to do that more often. All three of us had a good time. They really liked me taking part in it instead of just telling them what to do. Go figure. Husband and I believe in making the kids exercise regularly – yes I said MAKING because if we didn’t my son would stay parked in front of the Playstation all day. Milan takes a little more initiative on her own, but they’re kids and need that guidance.

Here’s what we did:

Jump rope – 2 mins
Squats – 1 min
Repeat 3 times

Walking lunges 1/2 up our driveway and back (approximately 30 yards)
Plyo-lunges (jumping lunges) – 10
Repeat 3 times

Heavy Bag – left, right jab combinations for 3 minutes
Repeat 3 times

Push Ups – 15, 15, 10, 10 (50 total)
The kids did full push ups; I did knees

Planks – 1 minute
Repeat 3 times

Stretching including back extensions, hamstring stretches and upper-body stretches.

I didn’t get a new picture of us (I know I’m slacking) these shots are from a run we did in our neighborhood.

How about you? Do you workout with your kids? You’d be amazed how much they might enjoy it …

Winks & Smiles,

  1. so glad you posted this – kind of reaffirmed a thought I had last night about exercising with my boys.. and then boom! you post this today! they are only 3 and 4 (almost 5) and I underestimate what they can do – but they already run sprints (and I watch them) but I’m going to change that and run with them next time. they wear me out w/out me exercising with them so I know it would be a good workout.
I have to stop complaining about not having enough time to workout by myself and take advantage of the situations and times I do have. (there – I said it!) :-)

    • So glad it was helpful. I like to workout on my own but yesterday it wasn’t going to happen if we didn’t all do it together. I’m glad we did because we had a good time. Smiles!

  2. Great post! My husband and I work out on a regular basis and from time to time we include the kids. We always have a great time when the four of us work out together, but I think its important they learn to incorporate exercise into their lives whether mom and dad participate. I love the idea of making them exercise on a regular basis, because hopefully this will become a natural habit for them. If we all did this in our homes we would be really helping in making our families, communities, and possibly even our nation one filled with healthy individuals. I will be speaking with my hubby tonight about coming up with a routine for the kids, as well scheduling our next family workout!

    • Good for you! Sounds like you’re already on the right track! I hope too that this will become a natural habit for mine. A part of what they do. I appreciate you sharing – smiles!

  3. I only do Zumba about 3x a week. My kids are involved in sports and my hubby is a couch potato. This morning, I got my husband to work out with me. Yay! I never reallly thought of having the kids do more exercises than their swim and gymnastics class. Would a kid as young as 6 years old be able to tackle this workout? I would love to have my sons work out with me.

    • As long as your doctor approves your kids exercising and they don’t have any restrictions sure they could do something similar to the workout I have listed above. You have to modify it to meet your child’s endurance level, but if they are healthy they can often do more than we think they can. The things we do are all using their own body weight. Lots of running, jumping, squatting, etc. All things they do when they play. My daughter (9) needs more than we did yesterday – her squats are perfect and she didn’t feel them at all. My son (11) and I were not quite as happy. LOL! Definitely, check with your physician first, then have some fun with it. Smiles!

  4. Love your blog! I do workout with my sons. Like you, I have to force them to do things (Nintendo is the devil) but once they’re out there, they enjoy themselves.

We play tennis (I play the two of them). We run. We play soccer and we swim. I tried to make them do Insanity with me but they lasted ten minutes. LOL. That may have been a little too much. :)

  5. When fitness is a family affair the kids REALLY enjoy. One family tradition for us that really kick starts our yearly committment to fitness is particiapting in Disney’s marathon weekend. Our little ones (now age 2) participate in the 100 meter dash – talk about hiliarious! The family “Team Hooks” (which consists of my husband, myself and our 3 girls) participate in the Fiesta 5k – (getting everyone to the starting line by 6 am is an adventure in itself). Then on to the half marathon for my oldest daughter and I!

Faith, Family, Fitness, and Fun = quality time, good health, and priceless memories. What an awesome gift to our children.

Your facebook page and blogs are great~ Thanks Wifey! Happy Running!
