Today is National Running Day. Whoo-hoo!

Quite honestly it’s a day I never thought I’d celebrate. In my twenties I laughed at the thought of running, smoked way too many cigarettes and spent much of my time on the couch. In my early thirties the cigarettes were gone, my babies arrived and so did the extra pounds. Now, in my early forties – two marathons and nine half marathons later – running has not only helped me improved my health, but it’s given me a new outlook on life. There’s a confidence that comes with setting and completing such a physically and mentally demanding goal like a marathon. It taught me not to limit myself – that with belief, a plan, and a little hard work I can accomplish things my former self would have laughed at.

Today I’m going to celebrate National Running Day by treating myself to a race registration. The Competitor Group is offering $20 off registrations for most of their races in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Race Series. Last year I ran the Latin Music Miami Half Marathon and the inaugural Savannah Half Marathon. Running on the beach in Miami was pure awesomeness and the Pitbull concert made it one of my favorite events of the year. In Savannah I held my first Race & Relax on the Road event and got a PR.

I’m actually saying, “I’m going to PR!”

I’m buying my Savannah registration today and will be finalizing the rest of my race calendar shortly. I’ve decided to do a third marathon in 2013 and I’m excited about when and where it’s going to be. I’m making sure it’s going to work logistically before I share any details. Fun!

Now, I’m off to wake the kids for swim practice; and then its time for a run.
