So, I briefly introduced you to MJ, my new MOTOACTV fitness tracker, last week, but I thought you might want to get to know her a little better.
The awesome folks at Verizon Wireless know how much I love running and sent me the MOTOACTV to test out on my runs. This isn’t going to be a full review because I haven’t had it long enough to test out all of its features yet, but I figured I’d share a little about the device and my first impressions.
One of the things that makes it standout from the rest is it’s a GPS fitness tracker and an MP3 player in one. Cool, right? The less things that I have to touch, swipe, carry or clip on the better. It also has an FM radio. Nice if I want to catch up on some of the gossip on the morning shows. Just kidding. Sort of. Some of it’s other features include an easy touch color screen display with scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass; a heart rate monitor, weather alerts, Wi-Fi, text alerts, a heart rate monitor and much more.
Here are a few things that I’ve noticed so far:
It was EASY for me to download music from my iTunes. One would think I might be fairly tech savvy since I work in social media. Um, no. I need things pretty simplistic for me to make them work and thank goodness this was. The sound quality was great, too, and the headphone cord is long enough that it doesn’t pull when I plug it in on my wrist. The device comes with a clip – the wristband I have is an extra accessory. Eventually I’d like to get wireless headphones, but for now the ones that come with it are good.
The Display. It’s pretty. OK, I know that’s superficial but I love that it’s in vibrant color and that it’s a touch screen. Being able to swipe and touch makes things easier when running but you still have to be careful not to let it distract you. No tripping allowed. Mine is a little sensitive and sometimes moves past the song or activity I was trying to get, but overall I like the touch feature a lot.
The GPS is accurate. Most GPS’ seem to vary a little – I bet you’ve done a run with a few friends and each of you end up with a different reading, right? So far it’s been right on par with my Garmin and with the last 10K race I ran. MJ had me at 1:08:35 and my official time for the Black Girls Run Drive to End Hunger 10K was 1:08:33. That’s only a 2 second difference. I don’t think I’ve ever had my times match up that close.
The Workout Summary is simple to see. This device is capable of doing many things. Truthfully, I don’t and won’t use half of the things that it offers – except when I’m testing it for review. I’m a very simple, straightforward gal. I love that after a workout my stats are right there ready for me to scroll through and see easily. I also love that if I want to get all technical and fancy there are so many options. So far it seems very versatile – good for the techies and the rest of us, too.
Me after a 4-miler with MJ
The jury is still out on how long the battery lasts. I haven’t had any problems with it dying quickly so far, but I also haven’t done a run with it longer than 7 miles. As I get ready for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Half Marathon and Reggae Half Marathon I guess we’ll see.

Looks like a great device – and looks much smaller than my Garmin!
Jillian
This looks very compact and perfect for running. Is it pretty light weight?
