Running — 28 October 2011

I’m a little sleepy this morning because I stayed up last night watching game six of the World Series. I’m not really a baseball fan but it is the “World Series” and as a sports lover I couldn’t resist. I didn’t plan on staying up; I just got sucked in.

The Texas Rangers were up in the series 3 games to 2; so it was win or go home for the St. Louis Cardinals. The game was tied 4 all in the 6th inning then in the 7th the Rangers jumped ahead with a 3 run lead. With their backs against the wall in the bottom of the 9th inning the Cards managed to tie the game and push it to extra innings. Every time it looked like they were done and about to lose they came back.

I fell asleep before the game ended and was excited when I flipped SportsCenter on this morning to see that the Cardinals won in the 11th inning. I’m not a Cards fan, I don’t really care who wins the series, but I love a good comeback. Last night’s game was an EXCELLENT example that you should never give up. There were several times in the game when they were down and had 2 outs but they never gave up.

When I see victories like that it gives me hope and motivation. I counted the Cards out in the 7th inning, as I’m sure many people did, but they stayed determined and they won.

There’s been times when I’ve felt like I had 2 outs in the 9th inning – sometimes I pushed on; and sometimes I let go. Running has helped me to change that; to believe in myself, to keep trying when things are difficult, and to never give up. Ten years ago I woudn’t run to the mailbox; now two marathons later I have a different mind set about achieving goals. I know what can be accomplished when I work hard. And, when I see games like last nights thriller it makes me want to work even harder.

Me after running my first marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon, one year ago.

This weekend I’m running the Atlanta Marathon Relay; and after watching last night’s game I’m super excited to get out there and have a great race. Maybe a PR!

How about you? What get’s you motivated? Whatever it is, I encourage you to channel that positive energy this weekend, push yourself toward your goals, and most importantly never give up.

Winks & Smiles,

  1. Awesome post and very inspirational. Motivation, for me, comes in all forms. It can be; a smell, social media posts, a book, a look, a chat with a friend, or the will to succeed.

Today, it’s finding this blog and the reminder that I too want to become a runner.

    • Aww, thanks! And, you CAN become that runner! Smiles!

  2. Great post!!! One of the biggest things running has taught me is not to give up, and I can achieve so much more than I ever imagined!

    • It’s so true! Thanks, Marlene!

  3. Great Post!! I came across your blog months ago just after having my son who is now six months old. You have motivated me and inspired me to run and run some more! ;-)

    • Thanks, Evelyn! And, congrats on your son … and your run! ;)

  4. What gets me motivated? Gosh. Nothing. Well, maybe a picture of Denzel..or Usher…or Dhani Jones.

  5. I ran a marathon in 2004 (Thanksgiving Day), and it remains the hardest physical thing I have ever done…but the journey of it really inspired me…Showing up for life is half of the battle I’ve found in life — and in running…

  6. Such a good post! It’s easy to give up and forget our aspirations. I try to remind myself not to close doors to my future, have to keep them open with will and determination.

    Congrats on relay!
